వినాయకుని జన్మ స్త్రీ, పురుష సంయోగం వలన కాక పంచభూతాలలో ఒకటైన పృధ్వి నుండి ఉత్పత్తి అయిన మృత్తిక (నలుగు పిండి) తో రూపొందినది. అతని వాహనము కూడ భూమిని తొలిచి నివసించే మూషికము (ఎలుక) ఈ విధంగా భూమి పుత్రుడైన గణపతి, ఆ భూమిని దున్నుకొని, నమ్ముకునే రైతులకు ఆరాధ్యుడైనాడు. పూర్వకాలపు రైతులు గజాననుని సస్యరక్షకునిగా ఆరాధించేవారు. అందుకని మట్టితో చేసిన వినాయక విగ్రహమునే శ్రేష్ట మనినారు. తదుపరి వ్యవసాయావసరాల కోసం రైతులు చెరువులలోని మట్టిని త్రవ్వుకుని పోతారు. కాని ఎవరూ వాటిని మరలా పూడ్చరు. వినాయకుని మట్టి విగ్రహాలను చెరువులో నిమజ్జనం చేయు ఆచారం వలన చెరువులలోని గుంటలు మరలా పూరించబడుతుంది. ఇట్టి తెలియని అవసరాన్ని మట్టి వినాయకుడు తీరుస్తుంటాడు. ఇలా భూమాత పుత్రుడు కాబట్టి భూమి నుంచి లభించే మట్టి తో వినాయకుని విగ్రహాలను తయారు చేస్తారు. వినాయక చవితినాడు అమ్మే వినాయకుని ప్రతిమలు మట్టితో తయారు చేయుటకు కారణం ఇదే.
